The World Atlas of Trees and Forests

This book is noteworthy. The World Atlas of Trees and Forests: Exploring Earth’s Forest Ecosystems by Herman Shugart, Peter White, Sassan Saatchi, and Jérôme Chave. It is a marvelously illustrated look at the world’s diverse forests and their ecosystems, published by Princeton University Press.

The earth’s forests are havens of nature supporting a diversity of life. Shaped by climate and geography, these vast and dynamic wooded spaces offer unique ecosystems that shelter complex and interdependent webs of flora, fungi, and animals.

The World Atlas of Trees and Forests offers a beautiful introduction to what forests are, how they work, how they grow, and how we map, assess, and conserve them. It contains things of need to know. And of course the wisdom Hallé, Oldeman, and Tomlinson:

“A third insight into tree forms comes from the work of Hallé, Oldeman, and Tomlinson. Their scheme overlaps with some features of Corner’s rules in that it is particularly concerned with the pattern of branching. It is distinctive, though, in its emphasis on dynamics of development from seed to adult plant, its emphasis on the spatial position of growing points that produce branching, and its inclusion of where and how reproductive structures are produced. The authors described 23 models for the development of tree forms, naming each for a prominent botanist. Taking the palm form (single unbranched, thick stems and many large leaves) as an extreme in Corner’s rules. They named it Corner’s model.”

Through woven woods

Every day I read a million news articles, I listen to a million talk shows, I watch a million documentairies, I scan a million scientific publications, I receive a million social media messages, I think about a million promises by our leaders, I see a million best pictures, I learn about a million frameworks, methods and models, I see a million pictures of happy people at a million conferences with a million of flowers, certificates, honours and medals, I cry a million tears for them dying from poverty and hunger, I wonder about a million leafs falling again and again and I keep a million hopes alive.

I sit quietly beside Frodo on the floor of the deep forest after Galadriel has left us. I listen to a million echoes around me and just wonder about the world and what to do next.

Deforestation fronts

Time to take action and reform the way we govern. Our present way of steering of Mother Nature and ourselves is ready for redesign and innovation. The WWF report Deforestation Fronts: drivers and responses in a changing world (13 january 2021) says it all.

The report is about the causes, pace and magnitude of deforestation and forest degradation. It provides a comprehensive analysis of deforestation connecting drivers and responses. Read report.

Ode aan het bosberaad

Dit groepje bomen is over van wat eens een groot en vooral wijs bos was. Een verlaten groepje dat mijn aandacht trok. Zij zijn de laatst overgeblevenen, restanten en als zodanig onderdeel van een (zwaar uitgedund) bosberaad.

De bomen spraken over hoe zij nu toch definitief het pad wilden terugvinden naar waar zij thuishoorden, het bos, hun bos. Een verwoede poging, zo meende ik te ontwaren. Protest ook.

Ik liep even naast Frodo en Sam in het Oude Bos en droomde over de trots en gewortelde wijsheid van de bomen:

“As they listened, they began to understand the lives of the Forest, apart from themselves, indeed to feel themselves as the strangers where all other things were at home. […] Tom’s words laid bare the hearts of trees and their thoughts, which were dark and strange, and filled with a hatred of things that go free upon the earth, gnawing, biting, breaking, hacking, burning: destroyers and usurpers. It was not called the Old Forest without reason, for it was indeed ancient, a survivor of vast forgotten woods; and in there lived yet, ageing no quicker than the hills, the fathers of the fathers of trees, remembering times when they were lords. The countless years had filled them with pride and rooted wisdom, and with malice.”

Een blik op het interieur van een organisatie kan inzicht geven hoe zij er echt bijstaat. Zij dient in overheidsland de democratische principes van transparantie, rechtmatigheid, verantwoording en aansprakelijkheid richting de burger. Zij kan ex ante zijn, maar ook ex post als gelijk welk bestuur verantwoording aflegt aan haar burgers of klanten in bijvoorbeeld een jaarverslag. Het is een vak omdat je moet weten welke indicator iets zegt over wat. Het oog moet precies zijn, de kennis voor uitleg en interpretatie aanwezig.

Een voorbeeld van een voortreffelijke blik op een interieur, in dit geval van een bos in het Parc du Château Noir in de provincie Aix-en-Provence door Paul Cézanne – onderweg tussen impressionisme en kubisme. Het kan dienen als illustratie hoe essentieel en verfijnd die blik kan zijn.

Dit schilderij is één van de meesterwerken hier gemaakt. De serie wordt wereldwijd geroemd om haar precisie in sfeer, atmosfeer en kleurstelling. Het zijn als ware transecten, doorsneden, die ons vertellen in welke fase het bos zich bevindt, hoe oud het bos is, hoe haar structuur, welke boomsoorten er groeien en hoe de groeiomstandigheden zijn.

Kan het een inspiratie zijn om voortaan (naast een woordenpalet) een kleurenpalet toe te voegen aan elk jaarverslag? Met één blik het interieur vangen. Indien zo, laat dan Cézanne dé inspirators zijn, de meester van de diagnose.
