Living World Canvas

Philosopher Jürgen Habermas distinguishes the living world and the system world. In the first, people and teams live and communicate between equals, based on arguments and without power. It is the world where love and friendship are leading and daily life dominates. Here it is expressed as a white canvas, in fact the chess board on which we are born, walk, live and die.

In the system world the instrumental rationality is used and says or dictates what and who is necessary to achieve a goal or to carry out a task. It is the world of rules and regulations. It is the other world, represented as a black canvas, here in the background and not dominant.

This rectangle archival pigment print of the city canvas with Pantone® Bright White and Pantone® Black 6c in the background is perfect for a modern, classic and reflective look in home and office interiors. It is a reminder on the wall, that the playing field of life for all of us starts with a clean palette to live our dreams and give creativity and colour to the world.

Ukraine Chessboard

The colours of Ukraine represent the ‘sky’ (blue) and the ‘wheat’ (yellow). Anno 2023 Ukraine is the chess board of autonomy and sovereignty, literally and figuratively. The Russian invasion at the end of February 2022 seems to be about expanding the empire of Great Russia Peter the Great, possibly about confiscating the fertile grounds of Ukraine,

This chess board has become a metaphor for the fight for democracy and freedom against autocracy and unfreedom. Presently the most felt and communicated semantic differential in the West, but possibly and even more likely, history will tell us that there is more under the sun.

This rectangle archival pigment print in the national colours of Ukraine is a strong reminder on the wall of how fragile democracy, dignity and freedom are and that fight. The Ukraine chess board is the playing field for strategic, tactical and operational thinking and acting starts with this magic board palette.

Chess Board Black & White

In the 6th century, chess’s predecessor was called Chaturanga in India, consisting of four divisions: infantry, cavalry, elephantry, and chariotry in the military on an 8×8 board. From the 12th century on, chess travelled from Arab to Europe.

Chess was quickly adopted by the medieval kings and the European nobility, and its popularity peaked during the late medieval period. Learning chess was an essential skill for knights. Now, it is still a popular strategic board game but for everyone. It begins with the board. It is, in fact, a symbol of equality and equal opportunities.

This rectangle archival pigment print of the full black and white chess board is perfect for a modern and classic look in the home and office interiors. It is a reminder on the wall that the playing field for strategic thinking and acting starts with this magic board palette.

Fragmented Forest

© Jack Kruf (2023) Fragmented Forest [fine art print]. Breda: Private collection.

Fragmentation of the forest reduces the quality and diversity of the ecosystem. Roads (white) and system borders (black) are really the main causes of the decline. Roads are for humans not for forests. They serve as carriers for leisure in, exploitation and destruction (red) of the natural habitats. Forest simply can not handle human dynamics.

Rainy Day Perspective

Today was a rainy day. I look out my window and see the city lights in the far distance, through the palette of raindrops. Where a romantic late evening view with a good glass of wine can cross the thoughts of a near future. A reflective mood.
