Our adventure across the Namibian Sossusvlei resulted in the wisdom that no place in the desert is actually the same. Every valley has its own colour palette and architecture. The high sand dunes can sometimes reach up to 325 meter, as high as the Eiffel Tower. What an impressive place to be, the desert.
Wind, gravitation, water and light of sun and moon wash the sands, day and night, century in, century out. A continuous process of rearrangement and movement. In fact the sand grains are always on the run. I found these colours and curves.
In Oog in oog met Gaia stelt de Franse filosoof en wetenschapsantropoloog Bruno Latour dat de natuur niet langer de stabiele achtergrond vormt van ons doen en laten. We zijn toegetreden tot het tijdvak van het antropoceen, het tijdvak waarin de ecologische gevolgen van het menselijk handelen hardhandig op de voorgrond treden.
De ecologische mutatie die zich voltrekt, betitelt Latour als het Nieuwe Klimaatregime. De oude natuur wijkt voor een wezen in beweging, waarin menselijke activiteit en natuurlijke wereld talloze onverwachte verbindingen aangaan: Gaia.
Latour neemt de controversiële Gaia-hypothese van James Lovelock als uitgangspunt, en zet daarnaast rechtsfilosofie en kunst in om de politieke, religieuze en wetenschappelijke dimensies van het verouderde natuurbegrip te ontwarren. Zo legt hij in dit ongemeen rijke en verrassende boek de basis voor een hoogst noodzakelijke politisering van de ecologie.
‘Oog in oog met Gaia’ is voortgekomen uit een cyclus van lezingen in Edinburgh. De lezingen zijn uitgebreid en volledig herschreven, met behoud van de oorspronkelijke toon en stijl. Latour koppelt denken-in-actie en humor aan een fabelachtige eruditie, maar schuwt de polemiek niet.
Dit komt niet van mij. Het komt uit de Memoires van Jean-Luc Dehaene. Maar het is zeker het overwegen waard:
“Aan de basis van de zogenaamde kloof tussen kiezer en politicus ligt een groot misverstand over de opdracht van de politiek. Deze moet niet het eigen belang maar het algemeen belang dienen: haar opdracht is de organisatie en de regeling van het samenleven van burgers. En daarom is de politiek meer op het wijdan op hetikgericht. Maar zo ervaart de geïndividualiseerde burger het niet. En ik geef toe, de politicus heeft dit misverstand mee in de hand gewerkt, onder meer door een uitgebreid dienstbetoon. Maar politici worden daarnaast al te gemakkelijk, ook in de media, afgeschilderd als profiteurs en zakkenvullers, als mensen die bezig zijn met hun eigen problemen, knoeien en verantwoordelijk zijn voor de torenhoge schulden. De burger voelt zich in de steek gelaten, een gevoel dat nog versterkt wordt door de angst die de snel veranderende samenleving bij sommigen oproept. Heel wat zekerheden komen op de helling te staan. Proteststemmen vertolken dat onbehagen. De protestkiezer stemt niet voor maar tegen iets”.

Een wijze tekst, die politici, toekomstige politici en wouldbe politici oproept tot bescheidenheid. De politiek lost niet alles op, en hoeft ook niet de schuld op zich te nemen van alles wat verkeerd gaat in de samenleving.
Sailing towards the sun can be a quite challenging experience. But it is worth doing so, from the shadows and the rain towards a more convenient place. Literally and metaphorically. For that, above all, you need that driving combination of conviction and craftsmanship. You have to have guts. And above you need a boat.
A plan will help you, but much more important is the action itself, that state of actually doing it, of going into an adventure. And of course you need to know about the moon and the stars, the water, the tides, the currents and the wind. And you need to know all about your own strengths and weaknesses. Outer and inner world meet in success, always.
In fact it is about the ability to navigate, that constant peddling between knowing where you are, where you want to be and what to do. Let’s go, towards the sun.

It is a process of gradual decline of the original, corrosion. Due to air, moisture, chemicals and temperature – most in combination – the interaction between the original material leads to a completely news set or palette of oxides. They are of a ‘lower’ alloy, chemically speaking.
Let us take it as a metaphor. That of hope for a better world as pristine light blue. The social pressure cooker of politics and drives towards destruction of some autocrats causes new ‘molecule’ connections on the board of hope with new colours that take over.
Corrosion of hope on ethical or moral values seems to be emerging in the present time frame. This is how it could look like.
